मुर्चुङ्गा: नेपालको परम्परागत मुखवाद्य यन्त्र
मुर्चुङ्गा नेपालको एक प्राचीन तथा लोकप्रिय लोकसांगीतिक वाद्ययन्त्र हो। यो लचिलो धातुबाट बनेको सानो मुखवाद्य यन्त्र हो, जसलाई अंग्रेजीमा Jaw Harp वा Mouth Harp पनि भनिन्छ। मुर्चुङ्गाको मुख्य भागमा रहेको धातुको जिब्रो (Reed) लाई औंलाले झट्का दिँदा ध्वनि उत्पन्न हुन्छ। वादकले यसलाई दाँत वा ओठको बीचमा राखेर बजाउँछन् र मुखलाई ध्वनि प्रतिध्वनि कक्ष (Resonating Chamber) का रूपमा प्रयोग गर्छन्। मुख, जिब्रो र सासको नियन्त्रणमार्फत विभिन्न प्रकारका लयात्मक तथा मधुर ध्वनिहरू सिर्जना गर्न सकिन्छ।
मुर्चुङ्गाको इतिहास निकै पुरानो मानिन्छ। विश्वका विभिन्न सभ्यताहरूमा यस प्रकारका मुखवाद्य यन्त्रहरू पाइए पनि नेपालमा यसको विशेष सम्बन्ध किराँती समुदायसँग रहेको छ। विशेष गरी राई, लिम्बू, सुनुवार र याक्खा समुदायमा मुर्चुङ्गा तथा यससँग मिल्दोजुल्दो वाद्ययन्त्र बिनायो परम्परागत रूपमा बजाइँदै आएको छ। विगतमा युवायुवतीहरूबीच भावना व्यक्त गर्न, मेलापातका समयमा मनोरञ्जन गर्न, गाउँघरका सांस्कृतिक कार्यक्रममा तथा व्यक्तिगत संगीत साधनाका रूपमा मुर्चुङ्गाको प्रयोग गरिन्थ्यो।
नेपालमा मुर्चुङ्गा विशेषगरी पूर्वी पहाडी क्षेत्र मा लोकप्रिय छ। कोशी प्रदेशका भोजपुर, खोटाङ, सोलुखुम्बु, संखुवासभा, धनकुटा, तेह्रथुम, इलाम, पाँचथर र ताप्लेजुङ लगायतका जिल्लाहरूमा यसको प्रयोग व्यापक रूपमा पाइन्छ। किराँती समुदायको सांस्कृतिक पहिचानसँग जोडिएको यो वाद्ययन्त्र आज पनि विभिन्न सांस्कृतिक कार्यक्रम, लोकसंगीत तथा परम्परागत उत्सवहरूमा प्रयोग गरिन्छ।
सानो आकार, सरल संरचना र मधुर ध्वनिका कारण मुर्चुङ्गा नेपाली लोकसंस्कृतिको एक महत्वपूर्ण सम्पदा मानिन्छ। यसले प्रकृति, प्रेम, भावना र ग्रामीण जीवनको सरलतालाई संगीतमार्फत अभिव्यक्त गर्दछ। आधुनिक संगीतका साधनहरूको विकास भए पनि मुर्चुङ्गाले नेपाली लोकसांगीतिक परम्परामा आफ्नो विशेष स्थान कायम राखेको छ।

Murchunga: Traditional Nepali Mouth Harp
Murchunga is a traditional Nepali musical instrument, also known as a jaw harp or mouth harp. It is made from a flexible metal reed or tongue attached to a small frame. The performer places the instrument near the mouth or between the teeth and plucks the reed with a finger. The mouth works like a sound chamber, creating a vibrating, rhythmic, and meditative tone.
Historically, Murchunga belongs to the wider family of jaw harps found in many ancient cultures. In Nepal, it became part of folk music, village entertainment, love songs, ritual sounds, and personal musical expression. It is especially connected with the Kiranti communities, including Rai, Limbu, Sunuwar, and Yakkha people. In Nepal, Murchunga is most popular in the eastern hilly region, especially among Kiranti communities of Koshi Province, including areas such as Bhojpur, Khotang, Solukhumbu, Sankhuwasabha, Dhankuta, Tehrathum, Ilam, Panchthar, and Taplejung. It is also known in other hill communities and is sometimes sold as a traditional Nepali cultural instrument in Kathmandu and tourist markets.
Murchunga is small, simple, and powerful. It does not need electricity or a large stage. Its sound comes from the player’s breath, mouth movement, and rhythm. For this reason, it is often seen as an intimate instrument—close to nature, memory, love, and traditional village life.
